Anyone have any guesses as to how this happened?

Well to me it looks like someone took that stick poking out the side of guitar and bashed the case with it after sticking in a perfectly good guitar... Actually looks like it got dropped on the corner of the case from pretty high up and cracked the top kerfing in the process... -Paul- |

Whatever it is, it is sad to see the damage that was done to it, i'd say it was dropped from high too! |

Yes indeed, do tell what happened. I guess a drop. But I'm also wondering if it concerns you that the break happened at the glue joint? I think I'd be a little concerned if one of my joints failed before the wood did. |

My guess is that you were having coffee at a nearby Starbucks, double latte with a side of espresso, skim, thank you very much and a tall dark woman strolled into the store with a black, sinister case shaped like a guitar. Naturally, you were curious. That and her size 11 shoes, shaped like tiny coffins and a shade of brown just like french polished cedar. Who could resist? Oh, nevermind, this might take all night! Tell! |

O.K. really wild guess, you were cutting something on the tablesaw and it got pinched, kickback.... and threw it right through the case into the guitar. Wild I say, Wild!! Greg |

beats me....dropped in the case like a heavy impact on the opposite side of the case and the inside of the case supporting the guitar sides like an outside mold but the top of the guitar is higher than the case so the impact forced everything above the guitar case sides to keep moving...somehow the braces became spears and took his face clean off??. |

I would guess drop from high place too. Is there a crack in the side as well? Or just a crack in the finish?

okay, here is the deal. An American living in Brasil was coming to the States to tour and promote his recent release of his latest album. He asked me for a guitar to tour with and promised to get a lot of exposure for the guitar and possibly sell it when done with it. I shipped the guitar USPS priority mail to him on the East coast where he got familiar with it for a few days. He then boarded a Southwest Airlines flight from Baltimore to his first leg of the tour. You guessed it, he checked my guitar!! When he got to his destination he saw that there was a nick in the case. He promptly reported it to the bag agent and got a damaged bag report for it. Here is the catch, he opened the case and told the agent that the guitar was fine. The damage to the guitar was not visible without removing the guitar from the case, which he didn't do. He then goes to his hotel removes the guitar and discovers the damage. Anyway, he was able to complete the tour with the instrument in the damaged condition and then he shipped it back to me with a handwritten damaged bag report from Southwest that stated there was no damage to the guitar, only the case. I immediately called the airline and they had no record of the report! So, the agent took all the info again and this time the record stated that the guitar was damaged as well! 
Long story short, they want me to ship the guitar to Texas to examine it and possibly have it repaired. I told them I would do the repair and suggested they pay me for it and a new case. I sent off pics and a report of what happened to Southwest today and they say I should hear from them within a month about a response. Meantime, the guy who played it is in Brazil drinking caipirinhas on the beach and I am stuck with the problem. Something is wrong with this picture.

Rod, after looking at the pic I posted I ran back to the shop to see if it was a crack. Fortunately it is just the lighting in the pic. There is no crack in the finish or the side. |

The top seperated from the kerfing because it broke. The binding is still glued to the side of the top. Fortunately the side didn't break. I have seen several guitars dropped in the past where the back and or top seperate from the side with a clean break but the kerfing and sometimes interior bracing take a beating. I have also seen scarf joints break cleanly on necks beacuse of whiplash type action from falling over. My guess is that this guitar case was dropped on the edge and it was so hard that the impact broke the kerfing and the rest of the glue joint came loose under the impact. It is possible to have a glue joint come loose without damaging the surround wood. For example, think of removing a bridge. A good blunt force blow with a spatula and hammer to a bridge will sometimes pop it right off with no damage to the top or bridge. |

Wow! Damaged in flight baggage check, never thought that could happen! 
That stinks Robbie!!! Total B.S.!!! I would suggest, you take the guitar to someone you respect as a repair person and get a written estimate or two, and send it too them, along with photos! I wouldn't of even told them that you repair, but it's too late I guess. [quote]they say I should hear from them within a month [/quote] Sounds like Southwest has a back log.
